Causes of illegal dumping
1. High levels of general waste production:
Research has shown that a higher level of overall waste production has a clear link with increased rates of illegal dumping of waste and the increasing amount of illegal dumping spots (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). The increase in overall waste production is linked with riches, rapid change of preferences, and the ever-growing population all over the world (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). Also, people are starting to be more and more consumer-oriented than before (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.).
In the past, people relied on new and creative ways to use old things instead of throwing them away (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). Still, in the contemporary world, most people are looking for new and better products, especially home appliances, clothes and electronics (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.).
2. Rapid population growth
The growth in the worldwide population is one of the biggest driving factors of illegal garbage dumping (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). Due to fact that the overall level of waste production is directly linked with the population on earth, an increase in population automatically involves an increase in the amount of overall waste (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). There are official waste disposal sites which are available for people to use to get rid of the large quantities of waste (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). On the other hand, there is a small but still noteworthy amount of people who simply dump their trash illegally in the woods or other places (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). This problem is multiplying with an increase in population because there is more waste is produced, and therefore the likelihood for more illegal dumping is likely to increase (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.).
3. Lack of understanding of the need to recycle waste
The majority of people understand and are very much aware of the consequences that come with illegal dumping (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). Nevertheless, some individuals simply do not see the need to recycle their waste or follow the proper waste disposal channels and as such go to very unusual lengths to dispose their waste illegally (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.).
Some people are essentially too lazy to bring their trash to official dumping sites that have been designated by local governments (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). A small part of our society also does not care about the illegal dumping problem and its consequences (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.). They do this by avoiding prosecution and detection entirely, which means that they are in fact aware that what they are doing is unlawful (Conserve Energy Future, n.d.).
